DO WE NEED SO MANY LANGUAGES???!!!

Many languages are disappearing every year. Is this a bad thing, or could having fewer languages help bring people together?

The world appears to be moving towards a smaller number of languages such as English, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese or Hindi, each with millions or billions of speakers. Unfortunately this means that smaller languages are in danger of disappearing. Some people fear the loss of culture and identity, while others believe a world with easier communication would be a better place. In this essay, I will discuss the dangers of both outcomes.

We are indeed losing a lot of languages. One language expert estimates that 60%-80% of all languages will disappear in 100 years, just three generations from now. This is a major loss. First of all, the way that people think is to a certain degree rooted in their first languages. A community’s language is bound up with its way of life, culture, religious beliefs and identity. A second point is the loss of diversity: different languages can contribute to different ways of looking at and solving human problems. Thirdly, fewer languages does not necessarily mean better communication: it could even mean a dangerous situation with billions of people fighting against each other, rather than smaller groups as in the past. This could be the most important drawback: as more people speak one language, it becomes easier for billions to be influenced by shallow media or aggressive politicians.

However, there might be a lot to be gained from having fewer languages and greater communication. First of all is today’s practical problem of translation: business is more difficult, travel is more complicated, and misunderstandings arise. Another current problem is marginalization: communities who do not speak a major world language fall behind in science and technology and their economies suffer. Third, having fewer languages might mean more shared ideas. Global collaboration could happen instantly rather than taking years. And finally, although some people are afraid of the loss of culture or identity, it seems that good ideas can survive. We don’t speak Latin or classical Greek anymore, but the ideas and values of the people who spoke those languages are still with us.

In conclusion, it seems inevitable that some languages will disappear: like animals or plants, they need a specific habitat and can be squeezed out by stronger competitors. The answer is not to hide and isolate ourselves but to be confident about our identity in whatever language we spea

THE FACT THAT YOU DON'T KNOW

In 1960 NASA's Lewis Research Center conducted the first NASA studies of the spacecraft and equipment required for a manned expedition to Mars. A standard mission profile was established. This basically followed the Von Braun scheme of 1952. A spacecraft would be assembled in low earth orbit, and then launch itself toward Mars. After using rockets to brake into Mars orbit, a separate lander would descend from a mother ship to the surface. After exploration of the terrain it would launch itself back into Mars orbit to rendezvous and dock with the mother ship. A rocket would boost the mother ship back toward earth. The scheme differed from Von Braun's in having seven crew and using nuclear thermal propulsion, which in turn allowed a faster 420 day opposition-class mission with 40 days on Mars. Instead of using rockets to brake into earth orbit on return, an earth return vehicle would separate from the mother ship. This was seen as a 13.6 metric ton delta-wing spaceplane with a 6.7 m wingspan, which would re-enter the earth's atmosphere. The mother ship would be disposed of, sailing past earth into solar orbit. Launch date would be 19 May 1971, and total mission delta-V would be 19.8 km/s.

The danger of radiation outside the earth's protecting radiation belts was understood now, and Lewis considered provision of an appropriate radiation shelter a major driver in any expedition design. The mother ship habitation quarters provided 35 square meters of floor space on two levels, with a cylindrical radiation vault at the centerline, which doubled as sleeping quarters. Such a shelter would weigh 21.4 metric tons if a maximum exposure of 100 REM was considered permissible and no major solar flares occurred. However if the crew exposure had to be limited to 100 REM and it was assumed one flare would occur, the shelter's mass would increase to 74.5 metric tons. If crew exposure was limited to 50 REM, the mass of the shelter shot up to 127 metric tons. Lewis found that shorter duration trips were no heavier than longer trips to Mars, since the shelter would be lighter on a shorter trip for the same radiation dose. All things considered, the final Lewis conclusion that a ship using nuclear thermal propulsion, meeting the mission profile, and limiting the crewmember's dose to 100 REM, would have a total mass of 614 metric tons on departure from earth orbit.

In early December 1891, Luther Gulick, chairman of the physical education department at the School for Christian Workers (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts, instructed physical education teacher James Naismith to invent a new game to entertain the school's athletes during the winter season. With an ordinary soccer ball, Naismith assembled his class of 18 young men, appointed captains of two nine-player teams, and introduced them to the game of Basket Ball (then two words). Naismith, who had outlined 13 original rules, dispatched the school janitor to find two boxes to be fastened to the balcony railing at opposite sides of the gymnasium, where they would serve as goals. The school janitor, however, only found two half-bushel peach baskets, and the game was played with these.

The soccer ball and the peach basket soon gave way to specialized equipment. US prosecutors described Lin Mun Poo, 32, as an “extremely sophisticated and dangerous computer hacker” in documents obtained from the US Justice Department.

Lin made world headlines for the wrong reasons — he managed to hack into high security cyber systems of major institutions in the US, including the Federal Reserve Bank and the Pentagon’s security contractors.

He was caught in a New York diner by the Secret Service on Oct 21 while allegedly selling stolen credit card numbers for US$1,000 (RM3,100). It was only hours after he had arrived in the city.

On Thursday, he was indicted by a grand jury on four charges, including for hacking into the central bank branch in Cleveland.

If convicted, Lin faces a jail sentence of between six-and-a-half years and eight years.

According to Malaysian authorities, Lin hails from Ipoh where he has a registered business address.

“He is highly professional and we believe he works with at least one accomplice,” a senior police official told Sunday Star.

The girl has an interest in music and like to hear the music that produced by two man. But the girl has only one coin, so she needs to choose one from the two mans. The main theme of this story is competition. We can see the competition between the two one-band man that against each other to get the golden coin from the child. The symbol that I can found from this story is “THE COIN” that own by the girl. The two man compete each other to get the coin. It shows the coin is symbol of owned for the two of the One –Band man. They try to own the coin for theirselves. The most interesting parts that I can found from this story is when the girl get a beg of coins from somebody as a result for her great performance. I know that all of you had watch the short movie titled One Man Band. It is really interesting short story produce by pixar.
The animation looks so cool and realistic. Althought it is only 5-10 minutes movie, but it full with many message to give to the
audiences. The story is about the two musicians compete each other to gain a gold coin from the little kid. The two musicians is very talented
and they do not realize that if they combined each other, they can produce an awesome band. But the two musicians seems to be arrogant
But suddenly the coin drops into the drain as the little kid cover his ears because of the noisy sound that the musicians make.
The little girl started to mad and took one violin and play it very well.

All of sudden, beg full with coins drop in front of the little girl.
The two musicians feel very surprised. After that, the little girl take one gold coin and throw it into the top of the fountain. Thats the
story all about. As we can see from the story, the little girl are very kind. She wanted to give the musicians gold coin to appreciate their effort
to entertain her. But after the coin drop, the little girl becomes mad and want to revenge the two musicians.

We can see many elements of irony in the story. The two musicians can performed well if they play it together as a team. But the two of them seems to
be selfish. Another example is the two musicians worked harder to get gold coin, but at the end, the coin drop into drain. The little girl who play
violin with less effort gain a bag of coin.

As Mr. Razol says music is the main element of this short movie. Music give a mood and let the audiences hear how well they
are. From the music, we can get the differences music from the two musicians. Music make the story looks interesting and entertaining

Hey English Tutorial Group 21, I want to share about a recent article I read from the internet. It is about how scratching is very addictive. Scratching can be addictive just by watching someone else who is scratching. It is called 'transmission scratching', and can cause a room full of people to start to scratch. This is the same as watching people yawn. We tends to follow the person action without our own aware. A dermatologists at the University of North Carolina said that scratching can become addictive because our brain become extra sensitive when we see someone else scratching. Therefore, our brain detect any change in the skin connect to scratching. An experiment has been done to help people who suffer from chronic scratching and other skin diseases.

A one man band is a musician who plays a number of musical instruments simultaneously using their hands, feet, limbs and various mechanical contraptions. UNIVERSITY: you either eat at the cafeteria( X_X) or you survive off of tuna and bread

HIGH SCHOOL: you take buses to your sports events
UNIVERSITY: you take the school's RV's and have to DRIVE 6 hours to play a game

HIGH SCHOOL: after school you practice sports
UNIVERSITY: practice time is made when the captains and coaches see fit

HIGH SCHOOL: usually 4-6 classes an hour each, school from 8am -3pm usually
UNIVERSITY: you pick your classes and hours so you can have class at 7am or 7pm and classes can be 2 hours long

HIGH SCHOOL: class size is about 30
UNIVERSITY: lecture is about 300 people sometimes and then discussion is like around 15 (notice there are TWO classes for one class)

HIGH SCHOOL: cheating is hard and you get in little trouble
UNIVERSITY: cheating is SUPER easy because there are 300 people in a room with 1-3 proctors...DONT CHEAT because you WILL get kicked out

HIGH SCHOOL: you skip class everyone knows
UNIVERSITY: you skip class no one cares

HIGH SCHOOL: you don’t really get to know someone that personally except your best friends
UNIVERSITY: you live with people and see them all day everyday so its completely different

HIGH SCHOOL: you have a curfew and parties can be off limits
UNIVERSITY: you can go out and party any night you wish basically

HIGH SCHOOL: you have tests, , homework, EXTRA CREDIT, participation, and a final.
UNIVERSITY: usually 2-3 midterms each semester, a few quizzes, a loads o assignments, maybe a paper and a final thats 40% of your grade... no real extra credit or ways to beef up your grade, its tests and you pass or dont because UNIVERSITY prepares you and if you get a job and dont know what your doing you get fired!

HIGH SCHOOL: 6 classes usually a whole year
UNIVERSITY: you get new classes each semester so its faster paced learning but cooler :)

HIGH SCHOOL: there are small relationships and nothing too too serious
UNIVERSITY: a lot of people hook up and there are way more serious relationships

HIGH SCHOOL: people stick to their labels and cliques
UNIVERSITY: there arent real labels everyone is cool with everyone and people date outside their race and comfort zones its amazing

i like UNIVERSITY lol its and sooo different than regular school because your actually working toward your career and having fun with your new friends being there and basically living life and growing up xD

DON'T LOSE GOOD TALENT

this is a news that i read on the star online.

MALAYSIA is experiencing a very serious brain drain problem, with many students staying overseas after they have graduated, and many local graduates and families migrating overseas, even as near as to Singapore.

Even though the Government is putting in a lot of initiatives in attracting Malaysians abroad to return to work, nothing much has changed as many still choose to live abroad.

One of the steps taken by the Public Services Department (PSD) is introducing TalentCorp. This allows PSD-sponsored students to come back to Malaysia to work in any private companies listed in TalentCorp, not just in the government sector. This allows the PSD students to contribute to the economy of Malaysia.

My brother is a PSD scholar who has just graduated with a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Economics from the London School of Economics. He is interested in working for a consulting firm, which TalentCorp could not offer.

He was very delighted to be offered his dream job in London (after failing many interviews from other companies) and asked PSD if he would be allowed to defer going back to Malaysia right after his graduation so that he could stay in London for a few years to learn new skills and transfer the knowledge back to Malaysia when he comes back.

Surprisingly, the PSD in London and Putrajaya said that they do not allow students to defer their bond any longer. All students would have to return to serve their bond or pay the money that PSD has spent on their education in one lump sum.

Since my brother was more interested in working in the London consulting firm, he chose to pay the scholarship back.

If PSD does not allow students to defer their bond anymore, students who wish to stay on overseas will need to pay their scholarship in full. And there will be nothing to attract them back to Malaysia, since salaries are higher overseas.

In addition, students who choose to pay their bond will be half a million ringgit “poorer” than their peers who choose to go back to Malaysia to work. Hence, they will need to work overseas for five years to break even or recover what they have “lost”, and then another five years to catch up with their peers in Malaysia, who would by then have owned a big house and two big cars.

I ask that the PSD reconsider allowing students to defer their bonds but, at the same time, require these students to sign a new contract stating that they must return to Malaysia within a stated period, say, five years after graduating; failing which they would incur a penalty of double or triple the scholarship amount.

With that, Malaysia can still retain these good talents, especially after they have acquired new skills, talents and knowledge that can be transferred back to Malaysia.

Why bother undertaking the hard work of training fresh graduates when we can leave that task to the companies abroad? By the time the graduates have to come back, they would have experience and can handle projects competently.

The Government needs to do something to retain the good talents. There is no point sponsoring good students to study overseas and letting them be exposed to the culture there and asking them to come back to work straight after.
